Katachi is the Japanese word for form. It is an old word made of two parts: kata, a pattern or mould, and chi, which one reading links to an inner force. Read this way, katachi describes a thing as a whole: what lies within it, and how that is expressed on its outer surface. Some researchers in Japan who study form use katachi to describe how form, function and meaning are interlinked. Change one, and the other two will be invariably impacted. Katachi is not a settled idea. It is closer to an open question.

The relationship between form, function and meaning is what we keep returning to, and we hope to create work that honours it.
